GRIJKROM - Thijs Stienen

Thijs Stienen is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the relationship between the individual and the collective.
In GRIJKROM, he questions what happens when the unique dissolves into the mass, and when separate elements come together to form something larger than the sum of their parts.
Working with painting and installation, Stienen creates an immersive environment from individually painted pieces that con- nect and overlap to form a new whole. Colours, patterns and forms extend throughout the space, dissolving the boundaries between individual works and turning the exhibition itself into one continuous composition.

At the centre of GRIJKROM lies the tension between individuality and collectivity: the zebra and the herd, the lion and nothingness. The viewer moves through the installation and becomes part of this shifting relationship, entering a space in which separate forms merge and new meanings emerge.

PERFORMANCE — WOLF VADER
As part of GRIJKROM, Wolf Vader activated the installation through a live performance. Moving through and responding to Stienen’s painted environment, the body became part of the composition itself. The performance introduced a temporary, physical layer to the work and further explored the tension between individuality and the collective whole.
