David Daut Makala + Rob van Acker | What Memory Is Made Of

Around 2008, David Daut Makala and Rob van Acker worked together at the shared art workspace AAWW in Lusaka, Zam- bia. Over time, their artistic practices developed in different directions. In What Memory Is Made Of, they come together again, bringing two distinct approaches to memory, movement and the way experiences are carried and transformed over time.

David Daut Makala
Born in Lusaka, Zambia, in 1983, David “Daut” Makala is a self-taught artist whose work explores memory, history and belonging through materials gathered across places and experiences. Developed between 2008 and the present in four different countries, the works in this exhibition reflect on movement, identity and the spaces that exist between borders. Rooted in personal and collective histories, Makala’s practice traces the ways memory is carried, transformed and reima- gined over time.

Rob van Acker
Born in Ermelo, the Netherlands, in 1965, Rob van Acker is a designer, welder and artist working across different creative fields. Having lived, worked and travelled in many parts of the world, his work in What Memory Is Made Of takes the form of a photographic diary spanning more than twenty years.
Images of landscapes, architectural details, natural elements and art, photographed across different countries and seasons, are mixed randomly to create new connections, stories and meanings. The installation reflects how memory operates over time: not as a stable record, but as something continuously reordered, re-edited and reinterpreted.
