Andrea Bertus + Annemiek Mommers

Andrea Bertus
Andrea Bertus (1977, Maastricht) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht in Visual Communication in 1999 and has since worked as an independent graphic designer. Her approach to design is defined by clarity in colour, typography and form, with a strong attention to refinement and detail.
This same sensibility is present in her autonomous work in watercolour and oil paint. Bertus approaches her paintings as studies in colour, exploring rhythm, transparency and layering. Trained as a graphic designer but raised by visual artists and surrounded by studios and makers from an early age, her work brings these two worlds naturally together.

Annemiek Mommers
Annemiek Mommers (1972, Heerlen) studied photographic design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and has worked as a freelance photographer since 1996. Her photographic practice ranges from regional news, portraits and sports to everyday subjects and autonomous work, driven by an intense way of looking, curiosity and an instinct for capturing the right moment.
Alongside photography, Mommers paints and draws, combining fragments of images and colours into new realities. Crea- ted on paper, canvas and tiles, these works resemble fragments from a diary: poetic, unexpected and open to interpretati- on. They create visual narratives in which everyone looks at the same image, yet may see and imagine something entirely different.
